Tips and Tricks for getting the perfect Emerald Isle rental home experience:
Get the most from your budget:
- Book your rental as early as possible. Rental schedules usually open a year in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many families book their Summer rentals during Christmas and Thanksgiving gatherings. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- June, July, and August are the most expensive months in coastal NC. To get the largest rental home within budget, we highly recommend reserving in Fall or Spring. You'll enjoy lower rental rates, greater selection, warm weather and the absence of large crowds at Havelock restaurants, beaches, and activities.
- Some owners offer discounts or promotional rates for veterans and active duty military. It's always a good idea to check with your host or property manager to see if special discounts are available for your family.
- Property managers frequently offer renters an option to obtain vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which will generally cost 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for days missed as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for more information.
- Find a copy of your local visitors guide upon arrival. If your rental home doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great local stories, visitor guide magazines have deals for nearby tours and attractions.
How to choose and book the rightrental:
- Choose your vacation dates and max budget.
- Decide how many beds and the bed configuration your group requires. Blue Whale, Almost Oceanfront House in Emerald Isle, NC! has 4 bedrooms and 5 bathrooms.
- Specific details about bedrooms and bed types is normally available on booking pages. Otherwise, reach out to the host before booking your home. Remember that most listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which frequently includes sofa beds.
- If your family is bringing pets, you'll need to find a pet-friendly property. Make sure to ask for details on breed, weight, and type restrictions. Some property owners require additional pet deposits and fees.
- Are you visiting for a single event? If so, use a map search to find nearby rentals.
- Appropriate accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. Confirm all required amenities are available before booking.
Additional considerations:
- Add the property manager's contact info to your phone. Understand and take a copy of arrival/departure procedures.
- Property managers are great sources of help! Don't be shy to ask questions during your stay.
- Protect the owner (and your things!) by locking and securing the home when you are away, just like you would back home.
- Upon arrival, note any issues with the rental property and immediately alert the host. Record all correspondence in case a dispute arises.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like troublesome vacationers bothering your peace and quiet. Use the golden rule for best judgement. If they like you, locals might even recommend great restaurants and places you would have never otherwise known!
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Neighbors can frequently help. Who better to ask where to grab the best tacos, have a great night out, or the best spots for shopping?
- Just prior to departing, take a final walk-through to confirm you have not forget anything. Re-check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden belongings. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Go through the rental a final time and look for damage. We suggest walking through with the host whenever possible. If the manager isn't available, remember to take photographs of the rental to record its condition.
- Did your group have a fantastic vacation? Most rental management companies make it easy for guests to provide comments. If your property and/or property manager was wonderful, they would love to hear it. If anything was imperfect and they failed to fix it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your comments.
