Tips and Tricks to get the optimal vacation home experience:
Find your perfect vacation home:
- Reserve your vacation home as early as possible. Rental schedules often open a year in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many families book their Summer rental homes during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Eve gatherings. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- Summer is the most expensive season in coastal NC. To find the best value, try shifting your vacation week to the Spring or Fall shoulder seasons. May, September, and even October offer warmer weather, fewer crowds, and greatly reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to book a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during the Summer. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Havelock vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday near the ocean? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with friends and family at the beach.
- Hosts and Property managers sometimes offer special rates for veterans. Ask your host or property manager if rate reductions are available for your family before you book.
- Booking websites usually offer customers an option to purchase trip insurance. Trip insurance, which costs between 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for days missed as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance might be a a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for details.
- Many property management companies and vacation rental houses supply Havelock area visitor guides which will include money-saving offers, either offered independently by local companies, or through a relationship with the management company and the business itself. You can also find Havelock visitors guide and coupon books at local gas stations and shopping centers.
Narrow your rental Search:
- Begin by selecting your trip dates and a spending budget.
- Decide how many bedrooms and the configuration you need. The Better Beaufort Experience has 3 bedrooms and 1 bathrooms.
- Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts & types is almost always available on booking pages. If you don't see them listed, email or call the property owner before booking the home. Note that most properties list maximum guest capacity, which frequently includes pull out couches in living rooms.
- Some rentals allow pets, and others do not. Acceptable types of dog or cat, weight and breeds may be restricted, and added costs may apply. Ask your host about allowable breeds and types before booking.
- Does your group require particular amenities? Most websites include search filters with amenity lists. Amenity filters help you quickly remove less-optimal properties.
- Proper accessibility can make or break a vacation for the less-mobile. Confirm all necessary amenities are available before booking.
Some things to know before you go:
- Review check in & check out procedures before leaving home. Add a note with the directions to your phone, and take a printed copy.
- Hosts are great sources of help! Feel free to ask questions during your stay.
- Protect the owner (and your things!) by keeping the rental locked up while you are gone, just like you would back home.
- Document any damages to the property during check in, and immediately e-mail them to the owner. We specifically recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that are very helpful if there is a dispute.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like disagreeable vacationers disrupting your peaceful home. Apply the golden rule for common sense. Happy residents may even recommend great beaches and scenic spots you would have never otherwise known about!
- Don't forget to... Ask a local! Local residents can frequently help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to find the best seashells, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for bird watching?
- Just prior to departing, take a final walk-through to make sure you haven't leave anything behind. Check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden items. Clean the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Go through the rental a final time and keep an eye out for any damage. We recommend inspecting the property with the host whenever possible. If the property manager is not available, ensure that you take photographs of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
- Did you have a wonderful stay? Most vacation rental websites make it easy for vacationers to provide reviews. If your property and/or property management company was fantastic, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was imperfect and they failed to fix it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your feedback.
