With more than a century of seafaring history woven into its walls, The Front Porch on Ann Street is full of the timeless ambiance of beautiful downtown Beaufort. It's a place for handsome days of exploring and balmy afternoons spent rocking on the front porch, watching the neighborhood pass you by.

One of the marvelous features of this home is its storied history, dating back to Captain Jack Parkins and his wife, Emily, who moved the home - by barge - from Adam's Creek to its present location after marrying in 1902. In the century since the home rolled on logs across Front Street, it has remained in the Parkins-Lewis family as Beaufort has grown up around it. The heart of town is half a mile west, home to an array of eateries and stores, the Island Express Ferry Service, and the North Carolina Maritime Museum.

Sunlight seems to find every corner of the home, thanks to generous windows that line both floors. Linger on the porch swing or the rocking chairs out front, fire up the gas grille, or step inside to either the living room or family room to bask in the comfort of central air conditioning.

Prepare family meals in the well-equipped kitchen, sit down for dinner in the formal dining room, and bring coffee and dessert to the yard out back to appreciate in the shade of mature trees. In the evenings, take a sunset bicycle ride, watch movies on the TV, log onto the WiFi to catch up on e-mail at one of numerous desk workspaces, and get a sound nighttime's sleep in the four inviting bedrooms upstairs.

• Summertime is high season in Beaufort. Booking a rental in Spring or Fall is our best tip for saving money on your vacation home. Rental rates are lower, and you'll find a larger selection of desirable homes. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve a beach front rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the Summer months. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Havelock vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation on the coast? Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years Eve are great times to gather with loved ones at the beach.
• Some hosts and property managers offer discounts for veterans and active duty military. Remember to ask your property manager if special offers are available for your family.
• Management companies and individual rental owners often offer guests an option to add vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which costs 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed days as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or extra gas expenses. • Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Residents can often help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to grab the best tacos, have a great night out, or the best spots for fishing?
• Re-check every room of the property to make sure that you've packed all of your belongings at departure. Re-check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden items. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
• Inspect the property a final time and keep an eye out for damages to contents or the property itself. We recommend walking through with the host whenever you can. If the manager isn't available, remember to take photos of the property to record its condition.
• Remember to leave a review! Property managers rely on excellent reviews to stimulate more bookings. They'll be much obliged for your review.
