How to find the best rental home experience:
When to book & When to go:
- The earlier you can book a vacation rental, the better your selection will be. The most desirable properties are reserved very early. Booking your vacation home up to 12 months before your travel dates is recommended. Christmas, Thanksgiving and New Years Eve are excellent times to search for and reserve your rental.
- Summer is the most expensive season in coastal NC. Booking a rental in Fall or Spring is our favorite way to save money on your vacation. Rates are lower, and you'll find a larger selection of desirable homes. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve a beach front rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the high season.
- Hosts sometimes offer special rates for active duty military and veterans. It's always a good idea to check with your host or property manager to see if discounts are available for your group before you book.
- Management companies and individual rental owners usually offer their guests an option to buy trip insurance. Trip insurance, which generally costs 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed time as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel overnight or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance can be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask the property owner for additional information.
- Find a copy of your local Havelock area magazine upon checking in. If your rental home doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great information, visitors guide magazines contain discounts for nearby restaurants, attractions, and tours.
Planning, selecting, and booking the rightrental:
- First and foremost, have your family commit to date ranges and a max budget.
- Determine how many beds and the bed configuration your group needs. Community amenities, fully equipped kitchen, entertainment options has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
- Specific information about bedrooms and bed counts & types is usually available on booking pages. If not, email or call the host before booking your rental. Note that most properties list the max. guest capacity, which oftentimes includes sofa beds in living rooms.
- Some rentals allow pets, but others do not. Acceptable types of pet, size and breeds may be restricted, and additional charges may apply. Ask your host about pets before booking.
- If there's a certain Havelock destination you simply love, search for homes that are either near by, or those that cater to your requirements.
- Appropriate accessibility can make or break a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. Make certain to inquire about wheel chair accessibility, pool lifts and specialized equipment needs.
More considerations:
- Get the owner's contact number and arrival/departure procedures for your rental.
- Property managers are there to help! Feel free to ask questions during your stay.
- Lock your vacation home while you are away. Protect your property!
- To make sure no damages are attributed to your family's stay, inspect the rental for any problem areas when you arrive. E-mail the host immediately to record any damages. If there is a dispute about legal responsibility later, having a record of concerns and contact attempts will be very helpful.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like troublesome vacationers bothering your peace. Practice the golden rule for common sense. If they like you, locals might even recommend great restaurants and places you would've not otherwise known about!
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Neighbors can typically help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to book the best tours, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fishing?
- Upon check-out, take a walk-through to confirm you did not forget any personal items. Make sure to check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden belongings. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
- Did your group have a excellent vacation? Most rental home management companies make it easy for travelers to provide feedback. If your rental and/or property manager was terrific, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was wrong and they failed to address it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your comments.
