Vacation rental booking tips and tricks:
How to get the best rental home value:
- Book your vacation rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules often become available a year in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many families reserve their Summer vacation rentals during Thanksgiving and Christmas gatherings. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- Summer months are high season in the Havelock area. To get the largest rental home within budget, we highly recommend booking in the Fall or Spring. You'll enjoy lower rental rates, greater selection, warm weather and the absence of large crowds at the beach and popular Havelock attractions.
- Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective vacation rental company or host whether your group qualifies for a reduced rate.
- Management companies and individual rental owners often offer guests an option to obtain trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which commonly costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed vacation time as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance can be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for specifics.
- Look for your local visitors guide upon checking in. If your rental doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and fuel stations. In addition to great local information, visitor guides have offers and deals for local attractions, tours, restaurants, and shops.
How to select the best vacation rental:
- Start by selecting a vacation week and a max budget.
- Decide how many bedrooms and the bed configuration your family needs. Blocks to the Beach! Huge Patio & Fenced-In Backyard. has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.
- Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts & types is often accessible online. Otherwise, email the property manager before booking your home. Note that most properties list the max. guest capacity, which often includes pull-out couches and bunk beds.
- Some properties allow pets, and some don't. Acceptable types of family pet, size and breeds may be restricted, and additional fees may apply. Ask your host about your furry family members before booking.
- If there's a particular Havelock attraction you are enamored with, browse homes that are either close by, or those that cater especially to your needs.
- Proper accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for the less-mobile. Make certain to ask about wheel chair accessibility, pool lifts and specialized equipment needs.
During your stay:
- Take a copy of the property manager's contact number and arrival/departure procedures for your rental. Store the manager's information in your smartphone and wallet.
- Ask questions. You may need instructions for a garage door opener, television set or appliance. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief call can prevent a lot of problems.
- Ensure you protect the owner (and your things!) by locking the rental while you are out, just like you would back home.
- Upon arrival, record any issues with the rental property and immediately alert the owner. Record all coorespondence.
- Be a good neighbor. Often times, surrounding homes are filled by permanent residents. Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking regulations is the right thing to do.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Local residents can often help. Who better to ask where to order delicious takeout, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for shopping?
- Just before checking out, complete a walk-through to confirm you did not forget anything. Check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden treasure. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Go through the rental one final time and look for damage. We suggest walking through with the property manager whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the manager isn't available, remember to take photos and video of the rental to record its condition.
- Remember to leave a review! Property owners rely on excellent reviews to inspire more bookings. They'll be grateful for your review. Alternatively, if something went wrong, other vacationing families will be thankful you shared your feedback find their best vacation rental. Remember to be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the host could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded quickly to remedy it.
